Re: [LUG] Ethernet connected photo quality printer - advice please

Thanks for the suggestions folks - I am having some problems getting my head around the way in which an Ethernet connected printer can be truly 100% shareable unless it handles print queues and has its own print job management system.

I have been unable to find the answers to such practical issues as how it can resolve two or more concurrent print requests from networked hosts without interleaving or even interprinting on the same pages, what happens if a spooling host dies 'mid spool', how do you kill off a 'bad' print job etc. etc. - loads of practical issues spring to mind.

Have been unable to find this out - it is rather crucial that whatever I choose can be shared transparently without having to run around the place shouting 'is it OK if I use the printer now???'

Has anyone had any experience of this - or can anyone point me in the direction of the relevant documentation please?

Thanks

David

Subject: Re: [LUG] Ethernet connected photo quality printer - advice please

I have a HP Officejet J6410 which fulfills all the criteria apart from separate ink tanks.  I got it a few weeks ago direct from HP for £90 inc postage.  Truro Staples had the same model for £170...

Could I please ask for a few suggestions as to good quality printers (even
better would be multi-function devices) which will fulfil the following
criteria :-

Ethernet connectivity (plugging directly into a hub with no need for a print
server or host acting as a print server)
Wireless accessibility.
Heterogeneous Windows/LINUX/MAC  network.
Must be fully shared by any combination of hosts (which presumably means the
printer itself organises the print queues etc.)

Photo quality (high resolution, borderless etc.)
Separate ink tanks
A4 is probably as big as required.

Card readers etc. desirable but not essential.

Any experiences of this type of set up would be welcomed.

Cheers

David
