Anything short of the disk platters being broken is recoverable (you 
simply get someone qualified to replace the motor mechanism and/or 
controllers), but it isn't cheap.

What precisely happened?

Do you have reason to think the breakage is caused by software 
(overwriting the file system), or hardware?
