No, screen picks up automatically if the connection is lost. As soon as
it gets input, it will restore everything it needs. You can unplug the
USB and it will restart, hibernate the laptop and it recovers - until
you press Ctrl-D, screen is fine.

I'm using the same arrangement with my own serial->USB connection.

That is really slow - are you sure it needs to be that slow?
