The man page is 3442 lines long. I haven't read it all but I don't see
how this will help; doesn't it call for manual intervention if it stops?
Anyway I have it working now, the script just switches automatically.

It's made by Quasar (project kit 3145) and consists of a board with
inputs from up to four thermometer chips which deliver the temperature
as serial text, ie in figures. The converter is made by 'Best
Connectivity'. Reading the Quasar document, though, I see it suggests
running the serial port at 2400baud. So (thinks) maybe it might help
to do this

$ screen /dev/ttyUSB0 2400

I'll try that. There may be a simpler way of setting the USB speed
but googlers just want to know how fast it will go.
