I rent servers from dreamhost/slicehost/bytemark quite happily. For very innovative companies with special hardware/software requirements. For companies that need physical access to their hardware for some reason or another. Chiefly I would want it in order to have a super fast connection at home. Though seriously, uploading images like I need to with Webconverger all the time is a major pain in the ass from Virgin Media XL connection I have in Woking, Surrey. I must have local copies of the images to test them locally. Anyway it's *nice* to have your server close by. I don't think it is necessary. I am more disappointed how much it costs in the UK to be an 'online producer'. There aren't many data center facilities in England. Ones that do exist are very expensive compared to any other country I've seen. And to get your own property hooked up to a 'leased line', well read on... > There are some people who want to colocate their own server because it's > cheap, but you're not going to make much money off them in the first > place and they come with a whole bunch of other problems. In my mind I thought a 50GBP price tag per month for an informal co-location for a server in this half-baked barn idea. Already this is a more expensive than Helsinki. This price is outrageous in Korea or Japan. :) So far the quotes for LES 100 at prazefarm.co.uk is around 50k GBP just to setup. I have a LONAP contact that says it should be more like 20k, though prazefarm.co.uk isn't in London and though there is fibre optic adjacent, it's difficult to compare. -- The Mailing List for the Devon & Cornwall LUG http://mailman.dclug.org.uk/listinfo/list FAQ: http://www.dcglug.org.uk/linux_adm/list-faq.html
