Operation not permitted (1) it seemed to copy the few files there but no directories. It gave the error Cbibbg/ rsync: recv generator: mkdir/"media/FREECOM/rsyncdocsdesk/Cbibbg failed: permission denied (13) The owner of FREECOM is root. So I did it with sudo It worked through a huge number of files unsuccessfully. I got the following error in every case (with corresponding destination name): rsync: chown /media/FREECOM/rsyncdocsdesk/Cbibbg" failed: Operation not permitted (1). They all seem to be folders. I tried to change permissions using sudo konqueror, which I thought I had done successfully some weeks ago, but I get the following error on opening konqueror: Error: "var/tmp/kdecache-james" is owned by uid 1000 instead of uid 0 (and a few other files in tmp and var) If I then try to change permissions (which again I thought I had done successfully before and I was then able to write files on the disc which mounts every time now after I managed to create a mount point myself) I get a large number of the following: QObject::connect: (sender name: 'job') ditto (receiver name: 'unnamed') ditto No such signal KIO:SimpleJob::redirection(KIO::Job*.const KURL&) If I try chown for the first time with sudo chown james -R /media/FREECOM/ I get a lot of the files looked at and get: chown: changing ownership of '/media/FREECOM/': operation not permitted (for all the files listed) Strangely I don't get all folders listed and the ones not mentioned have not changed in ownership. FINALLY AFTER ALL THAT I looked at the folder rsyncdocsdesk and it seems to have most of the stuff there (296 sybfolders with 4574 files instead of 300 subfolders with 4616 files)! I am sure you will recognise that I am confused about what has been happening here. Perhaps you could assist my decoding of the information and the apparent success against all indications and give me pointers for the next time I use rsync. Of course FREECOM is formatted with FAT32. I cannot now write to it by dragging and dropping in Konqueror! Nor with cp command: cp ~james/Documents/sudoku3.ods /media/FREECOM/ I get cp: cannot create regular file '/media/FREECOM/sudoku3.ods': Permission denied.
