My 24" (Samsung SyncMaster 245B) runs at 1920x1200 and it works /mostly/ fine in Ubuntu, I have a small issue with flickering on solid black which I am attributing to my ageing ATi Radeon 9600 and the drivers for it. It is not an issue under Windows which is annoying. All I will say about a large monitor is make sure you have enough desk space, not just width but depth.
