Simple answer yes...
Just plug the receiver in and off you, you will only get 'now and next'. Want the 
EPG? Pay sky a one off £20 freesatfromsky card and you are go to go.

No idea, never heard of them.
I use mythtv. (which uses Linux, that gets us back on topic)
