Not Linux but since you have a Windows machine I would suggest ZAR32 -
Zero Assumption Recovery.  I've known it recover files from three or
more overwrites and deletes off a FAT32 drive.  Since you haven't
written to the drive it should sail through :)
Thanks! Trying it now - it looks like it'll take a while (which is good) so I'll leave it overnight and keep my fingers crossed...
