I've been having some fun with NoteEdit and like the idea of getting loads of
out of copyright tunes out in MusicXML.
I want to approach my local primary school - perhaps with a linux box setup
with a few music programs - and with luck the kids can generate a lot of
tunes for everyone.
Alack and alas they have a lot of windows machines and if it takes off they
may like to be able to read the MusicXML in windows. Does anyone know of a
free music editor for W2K/XP that can import/export MusicXML - and preferably
play it too?

I have been helping a customer in the Shop who is trying to make Sibelius
work for WinXp (some font issues with their fonts), and  have looked at
LilyPond 2.11.41 available - February 25, 2008
Release 2.11.41 is available. It has a few bugfixes, updated program messages in French, German, Spanish and Vietnamese, and updates to the MusicXML converter. (Bugfixes, Download)
link for WinXp http://download.linuxaudio.org/lilypond/binaries/mingw/lilypond-2.10.33-1.mingw.exe

For linux it is very script based but there are some java apps and of course Rosegarden which use it to do notation

The one I was looking at was http://ace.acadiau.ca/score/others.htm#Denemo
