It's a Course Management System (CMS) aimed at educational
establishments. From what I've read about it, it's one of the next big
things that schools are starting to roll out so kids can upload and do
homework online.

Moodle is an open source CMS where as I believe companies like RM also
do similar things and I guess the nearest thing Microsoft have is
Sharepoint.

I've been having a bit of a play with it on Karoshi
(http://linuxgfx.co.uk/karoshi/mambo/dev/) which is a complete server
solution aimed at schools which includes (according to their web site)
all these functions:

Authentication/PDC Server
File Servers
Proxy Server
Web Server
Print Server
Backup Server
Media Studies Specialist Server
Server Monitoring Server

and all these features...

Server/Network Management
Shared Student and Staff Areas
Bulk User Creation
Wake on LAN
Windows/Linux Profile Management
Remote Server Management
Kixtart Logins
Software Deployment for Windows Clients
Programs Area
Room Booking
Help Centre/Asset Register
Multimedia Storage and Access
Website
eGroupWare
VLE/Online Classroom
WebMail
Home Access
Room Internet Banning
Website Cache
Internet Blocking
Internet Logging
Operating System Deployment/Ghosting
Online Library

I've only had a quick look but from what I can tell it's a pretty good
system and easy to administer. It's based on PCLinuxOS and pretty much
sets everything up for you on either a single server or multiple servers
(to spread the load out a bit).

Installed in 20 minutes from first boot on VMWare!*

That's quicker than an Ubuntu install I think.

* That was on a Core 2 based Pentium Dual Core running at 1.8GHz with
1GB ram, one core and 8GB hard drive space allocated to the VM. God
knows what it would do on a real machine, I bet it would fly though!!!
