I think you will find the php "magic" occurring in:-

/etc/apache2/mods-available/php4.conf and
/etc/apache2/mods-available/php4.load
(and with any luck you have a link from mods-enabled back to mods available)

your exact distribution path may vary as will php4/php5 but it will be
somewhere in the apache conf files.

but php4.conf has the list of extensions that are associated with php
files and php4.load points at the library that is executed to do all
the work as an apache plugin.
