I seem to have fixed it,  for the record this was (or seems to have 
been) flagged as a serious error,  so it was a known bug only recently 
fixed, which explains why endless trying failed.

anyway, having installed a few other packages, its happy now,  which is 
a good thing as it was preventing me from installing a different things.
