I'm an Ubuntu fan through and through. It's based on Debian, the elder geeks super quality distribution - it'll always be free and supported, plus the Ubuntu community forums and IRC support channels are the best I've seen. In addition, the Gnome Desktop is very simple and easy to use, and the distribution supports running KDE also if you require it.
