Re: [LUG] blank sreen

I realise this is all sorted now, but I thought this might be good to share, for everyone's future reference.

I had a customer bring me a laptop a short while ago - a compaq presario, although im sure this will apply to other makes.

It had the same issue, all working away in the background, could hear it boot etc.  On closer examination, I noticed that if you held it in the right way, you could make out things on the screen - so I thought, "hmm back light appears to have died for some reason".

I was just packing it away with the intention to send it off to our repair subcontractors when I noticed the little rubber nipple that tells the pc if the case is open looked funny.   It turned out the nipple had been pushed into the hole far enough so it got stuck in the hole like a bent finger in a bit of pipe.  I poked it back out with a pin, and BING the display was fine.

Just saying as it may happen to one of you and this jogged my memory ;)

Failing that, your best option is to
switch to a console (Ctrl+Alt+F1), log-in, then type 'poweroff' so you at
least get a clean shutdown.
Console worked. Log-in OK Then to poweroff it wanted me to be superuser but would not accept my password. Ctrl-alt-del worked. Many thanks.
