Might sound obvious, but have you checked the Caps Lock isn't on? 
Also, on some laptops, the NumLock is used to enable those Fn keys - my old 
laptop used to do that and, if NumLock was enabled at startup (as it is with 
many distros unless you turn it off), then I could not log in.
