Pick a nice high port e.g 40000+ and ensure you have encryption enabled. If using Azureus for example, the option is found in Tools>Options>Connection>Transport Encryption. I find the connection will still work fine if you also tick the allow unencrypted connections boxes (not present in Ktorrent) - that seems to increase the number of available peers I find.
