I should get a newer distro.

Woody is quite old, especially for desktop use. You should simply upgrade
your existing installation - probably to Etch - testing.
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get dist-upgrade testing
You may have to edit /etc/apt/sources.list (using sudo or as root) if 'testing'
is not already mentioned in it.
Add something like:
deb ftp://mirror.ox.ac.uk/debian/ testing main
deb-src ftp://mirror.ox.ac.uk/debian/ testing main

Woody is too old, but you can update it without reinstalling or changing
to a different distro. There are specialist distros for multimedia purposes
- dynebolic is
one, primarily focused on video. In general terms sound and video in Linux
has advanced massively in the last few years and as oody was released in
2002 it woyuld definitely seem a bit old. Probably better with Ubuntu or
Centos with nmultimedia additions.
I replied->That sounds interesting. Is Ubuntu the same family of Linux
as Debian (does it have the same packadge management system) ? I have a
problem with APT as the Linux machine isn't on-line. Also I don't mind doing
installs.....

Since you already have Debian installed, I'd recommend just editing your
sources.list and upgrading to the latest stable/testing version. It might
take a while, but if you have configured things just the way you like 'em,
it might be less painful that installing from scratch.
I replied->OK...how would I edit my scources list ?....

I believe you mean "sarge". change "woody" for "stable" in the /etc/apt/sources.
list, upgrade packages as required, and roberts you mothers brother.
I replied->Yeah ! "Sarge" that's what I'm considering. Problem with the
APT option though as I said. No network connection on my Linux machine.

I wrote->Cheers for the reply. I will look into Ubuntu. If it's similar
to Debian I might be interested.

I wrote-> thanks for the replies. I'm going to look at Ubuntu and depending
on any of the answers to this post, investigate re-configureing Woody, have
a look at dynebolic or maybe upgrade to "Sarge".
Thanks for the suggestions.
