was this a Ubuntu or Ubuntu (Alternative). I have had to build machines 
with the alternative disk (even though they had the minimum memory 
requirements)  before because of resource problems, although to be fair 
I got past basic kernel loading etc.

Also (I know this may sound patronising) but you are not trying a 64bit 
version disk on a 32bit machine by any chance ?
