I think there are just so many distros these days, and for the beginner
a lot of the based on Debian but with a bit of work done on the hardware
set-up, or some extra bits sorted, are likely to work well.

There is Xandros and Mepis, and I dare say if you ask on the list you
may well get boxed sets of some of these, because, well some of them
pick them up at GLUG meetings, or conferences, and are generally content
with what we know.

If you are "unofficial support" for the first few days, I would say go
with what you know. There is a copy of the latest Mandriva floating
around. Or at least something where you have the ear of a friend who
knows it even better that you know Mandrake.

I think boxed sets with manuals are good for beginners, as there is a
bit of paper telling people which websites, or phone numbers, they can
get help on, and some reading material that may encourage them to use
some of the other software they might otherwise not even know about.
