sorry I hate answers like the one I'm about to give. VLC IMHO isn't the 
most stable of media players, though it has its good points like 
including codecs and dvdcss in the app. Have a go with xine, kaffeine or 
mplayer - kaffeine probably the nicest to use, gmplayer probably the 
highest output quality and often playing the disks other players reject.
