Having graphical software locally and sharing the files to it, will be a
lot quicker than an X session (VNC might be tolerable from India but
that depends on the documents, and it isn't elegant).

Just "scp" any files you need to hack on back to the local PC, work on
them, and "scp" them back.

Alternatively check out if any of the LiveCDs have sshfs, but probably
still wiser to copy the file locally, in case you discover the
application does more saving to disk than you expected. DSL has sshfs,
but as you said no OO, although I've not used DSL.
