default display manager = xdm

Before all I had on start up was the xdm screen asking for username and
pw and then direct to Icewm

Now xdm does not start, until I issue the command "startx"

How can I check that XDM is firing on start up? In reading google, the
key seems to be the init.d and rc2.d. In both of these xdm is referred
to

runlevel 2
