[LUG] Xwindows does not start automatically on reboot

Could someone give me some guidance as to where to look

-   Running Debian Etch
-   I changed the config file for my window manager (ICE)
-   Then wanted to close down the window manager to see the new settings

System froze, no consoles working, no commands

Rebooted but this time the Xwindows did not start automatically: the
command "startx" worked from console but did not run in the background.

Since then I get the same thing: xwindows starts when I enter "startx"
but not automatically. 

I have killed all x processes: still no joy
I have tried looking for a lock file, no joy
