OK, it was trying to write the lilo config based on the Knoppix one...
doh!  So I chrooted to hda8.  Now I get:

Warning:  COMPACT may conflict with LBA32 on some systems
Fatal: raid_setup: stat("/dev/hda")

The latter concerns me more.
hda *does* exist and it *is* the boot device, so why is LILO complaining?
