I'm not sure that is an American-ism, I think it's more to do with
Brussels. A lot of pharmaceuticals have dropped 'ph' recently to conform
to the European spellings.

Most British Approved Names that included sulph... are now sulf... and
cephalosporins are now cefalosporins.

Other changes are replacing 'y' with 'i', dropping the silent 'h' in
some names, there's a long list.
