Re: [LUG] Backup Routines

Bacula is my preferred choice - takes a bit of getting to know but it has certainly saved our network on a couple of occasions.  It is NOT wonderful if a bare metal recovery is required of an individual host, but can be coerced into performing this provided this has been considered in advance.

It will perform cross network, cross platform securities including windows boxes and maintains a database of all its dumps.

It will allow fully automated securities of types full, incremental and differential to a range of media types and even includes a verify option to cross check system file integrity.

It has an active following and user base and in our experience has been found to be a well developed mature tool which does just what it says on the tin.

You can find out all about it (and download obviously) at Sourceforge.

Hope this helps

Subject: [LUG] Backup Routines

Hello All,

At the moment I am backing up a linux box (Mandriva 2006) with norton ghost 2002 to several cds.  This works OK, but I have to reboot, and the backup strategy is manual.  I am looking at setting up an automated backup over the network to a removable hard disk connected by firewire on a 2k box.  What do most people do for automated network backups?  At the moment I am looking at setting up rsync.  Are there any other solutions I should consider?  Amanda seems to be an option also.
