The reason why I asked in the first place was that I installed Kubuntu (twice) yesterday using the *expert* option, merely to have more control during the installation process, which also makes provision for a root password. Both times I found that SUDO was broken and using SU + root password didn't work for some tools. Therefore, I logged in as root just to play around, wasn't impressed with the distro anyway and re-installed good ol' Sarge: where I never have felt a need to log in as root :~) As an aside. One Sarge default which, purely in a standalone laptop/desktop scenario, I find OTT is the requirement to use root password to reboot/logout. However, this is easily overcome by using KDM in place of GDM. -- W.
