Can you flick it to the third console "ctrl-alt-F3" before this, so you can see error messages.
Sometimes if the display is messed up, "VGA=791" (IIRC) as an option to the kernel helps "expert26 vga=791", Ubuntu LiveCD, and various other bootable CDs add this option by default, but I think you are getting passed this step.
Really need a clearer idea of what is going wrong before commenting further. If it completely hangs after detecting CD (which is a distinct step in the expert install at least), then have you checked if the CD drive is support, or for known hardware issues. There are some very wacky CD drives out there.
