With crackling ask the Telco to increase the gain on the line.
Essentially increasing the power of the signal helps to swamp any
background interference.  Incidentally a friend of mine once had her
modem right next to her radio.  Oddly enough her connection was lousy
when the radio was on.   Something else to bear in mind.
