Perhaps of interest to someone (perhaps a lurking tyro) who is looking for distro recommendations, apart from the ubiquitous Debian. Having built socket 7 1Ghz Athlon/256 RAM box out bits from the junk box I decided to have a look at a couple of distro's other than Sarge which is installed elsewhere. Firstly I installed Ubuntu, having received a packet of disks. Installed smoothly but I don't like Gnome much nor messing about as user with su in order to load KDE etc.. (/security/paranoia). Having abandoned SuSe for Debian and now feeling that Sarge is, after 8 months, beginning to lag behind I decided to have a fresh look at SuSE and try the download version, provided that I could "detoxify it" by getting rid of the US language etc. Very impressed. Faultless installation, quick Apt-get update etc. Addition of Symantic, Word-British and KDE-British etc. and SuSE even detected my new(ish) Epson scanner - first distro to do so. Anyway, the end result is a nice SuSe/Debian hybrid which, having been tested and played with, will now replace Sarge on my desktop box. Sarge will remain installed on my laptop in the hope of a few new updates in the near future. Finally as a mere desktop user, I won't feel "locked in" to SuSE any more than I felt about Sarge. However, maybe I might later on, but by that time Etch could be released stable :-) W.
