It's at the rugby club, all in one pice which it would not have been had their been a large hammer to hand.

Ubuntu is somewhat different to Debian. There is a root account, but it's effectively disabled - you can only get root privileges with sudo, using the password of your user account.

What happens when you DO type su?

It will keep failing, as there's no root password set.
