They had evidently "fixed" something in one of the libraries used by
BIND 9.

Caused it to crash. I thought maybe a source code version issue, but
even when the latest version was built from source it still crashed and
burned, hence the assumption it was a library (or possibly a kernel) issue.

I suspect I just had some bad luck with Ubuntu, I've used the LiveCD
extensively for rescuing, demoing etc. and had few issues of any kind.
If I was doing an LTSP project, and saw what looks like people having
done a lot of work to make my life easier I would go with Ubuntu for it.
