The community will. I matters not what individuals do, the wider community is 
still interested in 2.4 and it's use is common and widespread.

Maybe, maybe not. 2.2 I would say is not worth using in most cases but until I 
need to move to 2.6, I'll stay with 2.4

Best not to start on 2.4, true. But there is no reason to tag me as archaic!

New installs should go for 2.6 but until 2.6 is supported on all my hardware 
(e.g. embedded), I'll stay with 2.4.

Remember, I'm working on a program that is single-handedly keeping Gnome1 
libraries in distribution archives. There's lots of old stuff around and a 
lot of it is in active development. Until that development brings those 
projects into Gnome2 or KDE3, old code is still needed and support for old 
libraries and kernels will remain available.
