Just to clarify. Hdb my second hard disk is used only for gnu/linux so I don't have to faf about re-partitioning my main had drive or restoring the master boot sector if anthing goes wrong. If I use the suse dvd with the boot installed system then everything comes up fine. If I look at the lilo or grub config having tried both I can see that the entry is telling it to boot from hdb,the root partition, same as when mandrake and previous suse version have been installed. This is the first time I have had a problem with suse installing the boot loader. Usually they are installed on hda or sda. Simply because I don't want to overwrite the existing mbr. I already have a boot manager installed on another partition which resides on fat98. (xosloader). This calls xp for the rest of my familly who refuse to get to grips with gnu/linux, win98 for some obscure software I still use occasionally and then whatever linuxversion I am using Ray -- The Mailing List for the Devon & Cornwall LUG Mail majordomo@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with "unsubscribe list" in the message body to unsubscribe.
