Not 100% sure. But /usr/share/texmf/xdvi/XDvi looks like a candidate for xdvi (strace has to have some uses!). You can override fonts at the command line of course "-font" (man X), or merge your defaults with xrdb for old X apps. But I'm confused, presumably these odd fonts overwrote (or took priority over) existing font files in some way? I doubt they were a better match for the declared fonts.
