Assuming you are running Debian Sarge...
Amend /etc/apt/sources.list
Mine states just the following
deb http://security.debian.org/ stable/updates main contrib non-free
deb ftp://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/ stable main contrib non-free
#deb http://mirror.ox.ac.uk/debian/ stable main contrib non-free
I normally use the ftp.uk.debian mirror but the mirror.ox.ac.uk also
works: you only need use one
Followed by
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
You might also like to try cron-apt for regular updates
fwiw: I use gaim extensively for both msn and yahoo. Works like a dream.
