IT pay drops as work goes abroad By Andrew Taylor,Employment Correspondent Published: October 10 2005 03:00 | Last updated: October 10 2005 03:00 Pay for computer helpdesk workers has fallen by an average of 9.6 per cent in the past 12 months as companies have increasingly turned to cheaper offshore contractors, says an industry study. ..... However, highly skilled IT managers and consultants were receiving pay increases more than treble the rate of inflation. Separate figures published last week by ATSCo revealed that pay for consultants specialising in security had risen sharply due to increased concern over internet fraud, viruses and hacking. Ms Swain said: "It's proved much harder for senior level jobs to be sent offshore because they need to be face-to-face with their clients, they often possess business as well as technical skills and are far fewer in number so the economies of scale don't make it worth while. The fall in the number of graduates choosing IT careers will filter through to chronic skill shortages at the top in years to come." The study by iProfileStats reported that hourly rates for contract and temporary IT helpdesk workers fell from £16 an hour in 2004 to £12 an hour in 2005. Average salaries for permanent IT helpdesk workers fell from £18,076 to £17,538.
