Thats Sony for you. I've been using MiniDisc's since mid 1995, I bought my latest Hi-MD recorder partly due to the fact that standard recordable discs could be used as a storage medium for data (I think its about 230MB on a 50p 80 minute disc when formatted in HiMD mode and just under 1GB for a £5 HiMD disc).

It does allow data storage, but requires the Sony Sonic Stage software installing first. I haven't yet found a way of getting round this.

Saying that, for as long as I can remember, Sony have only supported Windows, and try and get out of offering proper support by saying that the software will only run on manufacturer pre-installed versions of Windows (which is total rubbish!).
