Briefly, I suspect that although the card has a capacity of 512MB, the filesystem you've formatted it with (FAT16 or FAT32?) has it's own overheads, which will reduce the overall storage space available. Loosing 34MB sounds excessive, but without googling I can't be sure this isn't normal.
