Re: [LUG] Disk Corruption - HEX - A blast from the past.

Hex editing, I remember the old speccy and typing in loads of hex, from the magazines to write programs, I even hacked the program so it would display the checksum of what I entered, a) to check for typing errors and b cos the mag made mistakes with checksums,

I spent a whole day coding with basic and some hex, and ended up with a program that ran for about 10 seconds (drawing part of a grid), then crashing, thankfully I saved the program, but it was really annoying.

Another of their hex editors started at address 32000 and took up the same part of memory as the programs being typed in, I saw that myself, but the magazine editors failed to, reader programs, for you. Most wer e excellent,

of course the how to hack course, that ran for ages, was nearly pure machine code, hex etc. I never ventured in to that as I did not have a dis assembler, and other tools.

Moving on hex editors are good for getting doom 3 to work under XP, of course I now downloaded the Linux version.

Learning to use a hex editor could be useful one day however, just be careful.

Hex editing all sounds a bit intense.

I don't really mind if I have to re-install everything again I just
have a few files on the disk I would like to get off 1st.

I did tyr using the Knoppix & Mepis live CD's as they both mount all
windows & linux volumes automatically. The plan was to simply copy the
data from linux to windows then rebuild linux. Howvever when clicking
on the linux volume it just errors & refuses to open.
Is there some kind of disk check I can run within these CD's that will
check/repair the volume.

Thank you
Steve

Hello

I have managed to some how corrupt my Linux drive.

I shut down out of linux then the next time I booted it failed to load
the GUI & was saying about running fsck. Which I did but it made no
differnce.

Now it doesn't even get that far grub starts to load then I get:

Grub Loading, please wait
Error 17

I'm afraid that might be a very sick disk. Grub appears to be complaining that it doesn't recognise the partition type...

From :

 http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/manual/grub.html#Troubleshooting

17 : Cannot mount selected partition
This error is returned if the partition requested exists, but the
filesystem type cannot be recognized by GRUB.

You might be able to connect this disk to another linux box or boot from
an install/recovery disk and use something like

http://www.stud.uni-hannover.de/user/76201/gpart

If the worst comes to the worst, you could attach the disk to another
box, dd it to an image file and poke around with a hex editor...

Which isn't pleasant, but has saved a disk for me before now.
