Now, as I am normally logged in as myself I can't save files to this

Any way that works will do. Typically you want the Apache user to have read (but usually not write - there are exceptions).

on a development point of view, I could develop stuff, locally. then
move the final set of files, to /var/www/
(this can be done with a simple shell script, run as root under su )

According to the read me user directories are enabled, only I can't find
public_html, within my user directory, should I create this,

Yes - just do it.

once I have doen this I take it it's just a case of pointing mozilla at
my local public_html directory.

So if I have called my desktop DURON1600, I dont' see to have a domain name but I am not on a network just a single user computer connected to the net, I probably have got a domain name but don't know what it is.

if I type

http://DURON1600/myusername/

if I do this, it changes the case to lowercase, so I get duron1600, (does this matter)
I have added html file to the public_html directory, but typing the above in mozilla it can't find the file,

Have I got the hostname part right?

Paul

Usually http://hostname/~username/ will get the public_html directory of
"username".
