Sounds silly but it worked for me. The settings I used were pc104 and en_GB (and yes I have more than 104 keys on my keyboard: at some point I will have to map the remaining keys but to be honest it is too much like hardwork at the moment) I also found http://www.osnews.com/story.php?news_id=2016 to be very helpful.
