Hi Paul,

Good plan :)

Does anyone know of a site or anywhere that:-

1) explains what a virus,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virus_(computing)

spyware,

http://www.visiontm.com/Spy/Glossary.htm

etc are
2) explains why / how computers become infected

Not sure about a url for this, but simply put PCs become infected most often by people not protecting their PCs adequately from infection and / or not taking appropriate precautions with suspect files. In short, whether a file is received from a known source, or especially an unknown one, *always* run it through an antivirus program first before running it.

3) explains why something like Firefox / Thunderbird are a better option

Again not sure of a URL but simply put ActiveX.

http://www.terena.nl/library/gnrt/appendix/glossary.html

T'bird and Firefox do not run ActiveX components automatically as their Microsoft equivalents do. Ergo none of those malicious attachments get run unless the user deliberately does so (see above ;))

4) also explains the difference between admin and user accounts on a Windows XP (or any) system so people know the difference and know when to use the different account types.

http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/ua_c_account_types.mspx

5) Explains what a firewall is, and how using one can help to prevent problems above, and how using an anti virus package can help.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firewall_%28networking%29 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antivirus

6) Explains why for most people Linux is a REAL alternative and how to get help,

http://www.linux.org/info/index.html

Hope this helps :)

Kind regards,

Julian

PS If you don't think some of the pages explain things clearly enough, try running the terms through Wikipedia :)
