'the shutdown sequence causes a page fault': I expect it would, but what do you mean by a 'page fault'?  Do you have the error message?

The only <ALT><CTRL> sequences I know of, other than the obvious one, are + and - to change the screen resolution (does not always work), F1-F6 to get a tty, and F7 to go back to GUI.  There might be more.  Maybe you could try these to see which causes the problem?
