Re: [LUG] Thunderbird problem

I find on a win98se box it is essential to uninstall the open source
software before installing the new upgraded version. (Needless to say
the uninstall gives the option of leaving all the email boxes etc
behind). This has been my experience with thunderbird, firefox and
open office
I was updating on my Linux box. It took exception to T'bird 1.0's
default setting of all mail going into the same Inbox seeing as each
mail account previously had separate mailboxes. Luckily I'd backed up
the Mail folder before the upgrade. Even so it was a lot of messing
about to get it straight, I think I lost the majority of my Address
Book, and I'll be a few days/weeks/months getting the filters straight.
On the plus side, for people with minimal mail usage it has a *GREAT*
filter for Spam. "If Sender is not in Address Book, delete from
server". Automatic white list with delete of *all* spam :)
The downside is that most of the mailing lists I subscribe to won't be
compatible with that. What I mean is that for the filtering to work,
the same From: address has to be presented every time. Unfortunately
most mailing lists give the From: address as the original sender. I'm
*not* criticising at all.... hell I wouldn't know the first thing about
setting up a mailing list. However it is an unfortunate side-effect
that either I would have to add everyone likely to post to all the lists
to my Address Book (which would be a neat trick in precognition to know
before a mail was received who the sender would be ;) ), or I lose all
the mailing lists, or I keep deleting all the spam by hand.
Quick question to Alex et al. Is it possible/ how much grief would it
be, to modify the mailing list so that, for example, the From: is always
'list@xxxxxxxxxxxxx'?
Kind regards,
Julian
