The phone line is fine. This has happened with multiple phone lines at different addresses and with different serial and phone cables.




Well that rules that out!

Have you tried adding debug to the pppd.options file /etc/ppp/ppp.options?, if i recall and looking for any naughtyness from pppd in the syslog. You might have a LCP (link control protocol) problem, ie not getting a LCP ack and hanging the connection, i had this once, but the syslog *should* tell you more and indicate a direction to investigate..
