Whats the physical phone line like? Can you hear any cracks or pops on 
the line at all? these will up set modems, but you need good hearing 
(unless it is really bad!) to hear the noise. There is a free automated 
line test from BT as well look in the phone book in the info section and 
you can test your own line (to some extent, but it has to be pretty bad 
to fail).
