Anyway, what I thought I would do is feedback on the use of Lindows 4.5.

Lindows 4.5 has been around for a while now. I tried it out, albeit the download
version, and had a horrible surprise waiting for me.

I have to agree with you, it certainly was one of the easiest to install distros I
had tried, but it seemed to have a disregard for user input. I selected the
"advanced" installation option - which seemed to ask only a couple of extra
questions regarding partitioning... which it then processed to ignore.

Let me expand a little. At the time I had several different OSs installed on my
system, some on hda and some on hdb. I chose to install Lindows to hdb. I used the
"advanced" (or is it expert?) mode and when requested, I told it to install onto
hdb2. Can't really be any clearer than that. h,d,b,2. During the installation it
obviously decided to take a look around on my harddrive (inspecting it to find any
Windows partitions I suspect) and found that hda7 was a nice place to install
instead. Now, let's compare these: target is hdb2, ended up on hda7. Hmm... me
thinks something's amiss there. What happened to be on hda7 was the /var partition
for my (then) main Mandrake install. Trashed. I did manage to recover 90% of the
functionality, but the RPM database was gone, which made it remarkably hard to
install rpm software nicely. Pretty much everything from that point was installed
from source and source only - it was easier.

Anyway, you can get the *whole* gory story (including a bit of an argument with an
ardent Lindows fan about whether ignoring user input should be acceptable or not)
from linuxquestions.org.

Google for "thymox "linuxquestions.org" lindows normal practice". Should be the
only LQ thread listed.

Grant.
