You can use the rpm utility to find what package libXft.so.1 came from and look for an update to that package.
You've got the right idea, and there are sites like "rpmfind.net" to help you find the right version if it isn't just available as an update from Mandrake.
For something as common as Mozilla ThunderBird you should be able to find an RPM anyway. This RPM should include any dependency requirements.
Also these days you ought to be able to find a tool that handles this dependency problem for you. I think both "apt" and "yum" are available.
