You can use the rpm utility to find what package libXft.so.1 came
from and look for an update to that package.

You've got the right idea, and there are sites like "rpmfind.net" to
help you find the right version if it isn't just available as an
update from Mandrake.

For something as common as Mozilla ThunderBird you should be able to
find an RPM anyway. This RPM should include any dependency requirements.

Also these days you ought to be able to find a tool that handles
this dependency problem for you. I think both "apt" and "yum" are
available.

I have to say (in Kai's absence) that Debian really wins big here as
it has used "apt" for ages, and they do a lot of work to make sure
things like this "just work" (and yes there is a Mozilla-ThunderBird
deb in Debian testing.
